Blur faces in a photo
Hide the faces in a photo before you post it: find them automatically, check each one, and pixelate or blur them in one step. The faces are found on your device, and the photo isn't uploaded.
How to blur faces
- Paste a photo with Ctrl+V, drop a file on the page or press Load.
- Press the Find button in the line that appears under the options bar (the Find faces button on the bar does the same).
- Each face found gets an outline. Tap one to leave it out, then press the button with the count, such as Pixelate 5, to cover the rest in one step, each with an oval of its own.
- Drag an oval over any face it missed, then copy the photo or save it as PNG, JPEG or WebP.
How faces are found
A small face detection model, YuNet, runs in your browser. It finds where faces are and nothing else. With no model files stored, it needs 6.8 MB (the model is 0.2 MB; the rest is the runtime, which background removal uses too). The page asks before downloading missing files. Face detection works offline once they're stored.
Pixelate or blur?
Pixelating with large blocks is the safer choice, which is why this page starts with it. Each face gets blocks at least a sixth of its height, and larger ones if you raise the block size. A light blur can be undone or still recognised. To blur instead, pick Blur on the bar before you press Find, and raise the strength. For a face that must stay unrecognisable for certain, cover it with a solid redaction box.
What it can miss
Faces turned away or seen side-on, faces covered by a hand or hair, strongly tilted faces, and faces only a few pixels high in a large photo. It can also outline something that isn't a face, such as a pattern on clothing. Tap it to leave it out. Check the photo before sharing it.
FAQ
Is my photo uploaded?
No. Faces are found and covered in your browser, and the photo never leaves your device.
Does it recognise who is in the photo?
No. The model only marks where a face is. It doesn't compare faces, put a name to one or keep anything about them.
Can I change a face afterwards?
Yes. Each face gets an oval of its own (a box, for a face cut off in a corner of the photo). Select it to move it, resize it or change its block size. One undo (Ctrl+Z) removes them all, and History reverts any one.
