Blur part of an image online
Soften a face, a busy background or any detail you want to play down in a photo or screenshot.
Blur is not secure redaction. A blur can be reversed to recover what was underneath, and blurred text is the easiest to read back. If you need a detail hidden for good, cover it with a solid redaction box instead. That removes the pixels underneath, so there is nothing left to recover.
How to blur part of an image
- Paste an image with Ctrl+V, drop a file on the page or press Load.
- The blur tool is ready. Drag a box over the area to soften, or pick the brush shape and paint over it.
- Adjust the Blur strength in the options bar, or pick the ellipse shape for a face; add more boxes as needed.
- Copy with Ctrl+C, or save as PNG, JPEG or WebP.
Blur a face or a background
Blur works well when you want something to fade back: a distracting wall behind your subject, or a face in a crowd you would rather not feature. Raise the Blur strength for a stronger effect, and use a separate box for each area. With Soft edge checked, the blur fades into the photo past the shape you drew instead of stopping at a hard edge. Inside the shape it keeps the strength you set. To find every face in a photo at once, press Find faces on the bar, as the blur faces page shows.
To pixelate instead, switch the tool from Blur to Pixelate in the options bar.
Blur a number plate or a sign
Soften a number plate or a sign in a street or car photo. A small, strong blur keeps the rest of the shot sharp.
FAQ
Can a blur be reversed?
Sometimes. A light blur can be partly undone, and blurred text is the easiest to read back. For anything sensitive, use a solid redaction box instead.
Is my image uploaded?
No. Blurring runs locally in your browser, and the image never leaves your device.
