Copy text from an image
Turn the text in a screenshot or a photo into text you can paste: an error message, an address, a code snippet, a quote. It's read in your browser. The image isn't uploaded, and neither is the text.
How to copy text from an image
- Paste an image with Ctrl+V, drop a file on the page or press Load.
- Press the Read text button in the line that appears under the options bar to read the whole image (Whole image on the bar does the same), or drag a box over the part you want. The Read tool (O) is already picked.
- Fix anything it misread in the box that appears, then press Copy in that box.
English and German
Pick the language of the text in the options bar. It starts at the page's language. Read as English, German text loses its umlauts and ß. With no model files stored, reading needs 3.5 MB for English or 2.3 MB for German (the model and runtime). The page asks before downloading missing files. The tool works offline once they're stored.
What reads well
Clear printed text on a plain background, as in screenshots of apps, web pages and error messages. Handwriting and stylised or decorative fonts read poorly, and very small, faint or low-contrast text, or text on a busy photo, can be missed. Check the text before you use it. A 0 can come out as an 8. Lines stay as they are in the image, a word split with a hyphen at a line's end is joined, and text in columns far apart is separated by a tab.
FAQ
Is my image uploaded?
No. The text is read by a model that runs in your browser, and neither the image nor the text leaves your device.
Does reading text change my image?
No. Nothing is added to the image and there's nothing to undo. You can go on to annotate, redact or save it as usual.
Can it read a PDF?
Not directly. Load a screenshot of the page instead.
